It is pretty simple to compare the number of crimes reported to police to the estimated number of violent crimes recorded in the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). Over the five years from 2015 to 2019, the NCVS indicates that there were 28,172,040 violent crimes, but the FBI Uniform Crime Report only shows that 6,111,194 were reported to the police — a rate of 21.7%. That ranges from a low of 18.9% reported in 2018 to a high of 23.95% in 2015.
