NEW YORK, NY – New York Police officers ended a dangerous standoff on the Fouth of July with a suspect who allegedly stabbed an eight-year-old boy to death and was holding his own 43-year-old father at knife-point, successfully rescuing the hostage.
The suspect, 20, reportedly refused several commands to drop the knife and an NYPD officer fired a single shot, striking the assailant. The officers rendered aid until he was brought to an area hospital where he died.
CBS News reported that the incident likely began with a domestic dispute but added that details are unclear. However, the unnamed suspect and eight-year-old victim may have been brothers or step-brothers. The mother of the eight-year-old victim, aged 29, and believed to be the suspect’s stepmother, was also injured according to The New York Post.
The NYPD posted an image of the knife recovered from the grisly scene.
