The coroner has released the identity of a 39-year-old man who died after a gunman opened fire on an apartment building in Zion, striking the man multiple times, early Friday morning.

An autopsy performed Friday showed Eric Irvin, 39, of Zion, died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.

The Zion Police Department responded around 2:40 a.m. Friday to an apartment building in the 2900 block of Elizabeth Avenue in Zion for a report of shots fired.

Police officers arrived and located a gunshot victim inside an apartment, according to Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli.

Lifesaving efforts were performed by police officers and Zion Fire/Rescue Department paramedics on Irvin.

Irvin was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
