NRA Home Firearm Safety Class is designed to teach the basics to anyone of any age who is interested in expanding his/her knowledge of firearms.

Full Description: This four hour class teaches safe gun handling and is conducted in our classroom. Students will be taught the following: the NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling; primary causes of firearms accidents; firearm components; how to load and unload handguns, rifles, shotguns; all facets of ammunition; cleaning and care; safe storage of firearms in the home; and the benefits of becoming an active participant in the shooting sports. Students will receive the NRA Home Firearm Safety handbook and class completion certificate.

Meet the following age requirements:

  • Certified Instructor: 21 years of age or older
  • Assistant Instructor: 18 years of age or older
  • Apprentice Instructor: 13-17 years of age

Receive a passing grade on the NRA Trainer’s Examination and appropriate instructor certification examination:

  • Certified: 90 percent or higher
  • Assistant: 85 percent or higher
  • Apprentice: 85 percent or higher

Do I need a F.O.I.D Card?

No, a F.O.I.D card is required to purchase firearms and ammunition.  Some training schools require a F.O.I.D. card to take training. Red Dot Arms Training Academy does not require a F.O.I.D card.

I am afraid of firearms. Would this be a good class for me to take?

Yes, this class is the ideal starting point for becoming familiar with firearms and becoming more comfortable with them.

Is there any shooting for this class?

The Home Firearm Safety class is a non-shooting class and is a basic introduction to firearms and ammunition.

What is the age limit for this class?

There is no actual age limit, but the student needs to be old enough to focus for a 4 hour period to take full benefit of the class. A parent or guardian must be present for those under 18 years of age.

My child, spouse or other family member has an interest in firearms but I do not. Would I benefit from taking this class?

Absolutely. If there are firearms in the home, everyone needs to be familiar with the safe, proper storage and handling methods of firearms.

Do we need to bring anything to the Home Firearm Safety class?

No, you do not need to bring anything to the Home Firearm Safety class.

Can we bring our own firearms?

Yes, but ammo is not allowed in the classroom. Please inform the instructor so it can be checked.

Does the Home Safety class qualify for Concealed Carry?

For the state of IL, the Home Firearm Safety class does not qualify for Concealed Carry. For the state of WI, it does qualify for Concealed Carry; however, we do recommend the RDA Concealed Carry Part 1 class since this class has range time.
