NRA Basic Rifle is designed to teach the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for the safe use of a rifle in target shooting.

Full Description: This class is 8 hours long and includes classroom instruction and range time learning to shoot rifles. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; rifle parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest, prone, sitting, standing and kneeling positions; cleaning, and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the Basics of Rifle Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, take a Basics of Rifle Shooting Student Examination and receive a class completion certificate.

  • Shooting Mat (to lay on the ground)
  • Wrap-around Eye Protection ***Normal wear glasses will not be proper protection. Shatter proof lenses are mandatory***

  • Tight necked t-shirt (prevents 2nd degree burns from the brass)
  • Knee Pads
  • Long sleeve shirt regardless of the temperature (prevents 2nd degree burns from the brass)

Do I need a F.O.I.D Card?

No, Red Dot Arms Training Academy does not require a F.O.I.D card to attend. Illinois residents should apply for their F.O.I.D. if they are planning to purchase, possess or transport their own firearms.

Are there gun rentals available?

Yes, please refer to rental tab page for available guns.

Do I need a sling?

A sling is highly recommended.

Are prescription eyeglasses acceptable for safety?

Not in the rifle class. Due to higher case pressures, safety glasses will be required. There are safety glasses that will fit over your prescription glasses.

Do I need a scope or optical device on my rifle?

Whatever sights you would like to use will be acceptable. If you bring a scope, please have it bore sighted first if you have not done so already.

Do I need a bi-pod, shooting stick or gun rest?

They are not mandatory, but would be helpful.

What calibers are acceptable?

All calibers are acceptable. You may bring whatever you like.

FOID Statement: Illinois residents that will be TRANSPORTING their own firearm to and from the class/range must be in possession of a valid FOID/CCL card, and be of legal age, 21 for handguns, and 18 for long guns.  A FOID card is not required to participate in the class. Out of state residents need to follow the age requirements and have a valid ID.
